William is a third year psychology major who is excited to be working with the Nicotine and Cannabis Policy center on tobacco research in the San Joaquin Valley. Since the time he was 10 years old and living in the Burbank area, William has been interested in a career helping others, and he is currently a premedical student at UC Merced. Along his journey, he has observed the regional health disparities present across California and hopes to work with others to improve health care research, policy, and access for those most in need.

Mia Estrada is a first-generation college student majoring in Bioengineering with an emphasis in Technology and minoring in Chemistry at UC Merced. She is passionate about pursuing a career in women’s health, with an interest in maternal and reproductive care for underserved communities.
Mia’s interest in pursuing a medical degree strengthened during her medical shadowing internship with Dr. Pinkerton, a family practice physician, where she gained exposure to patient care through observation, patient history taking, and assisting in physical examinations. She has also interned with CollegeCorps, where she engaged in academic activity planning, youth development, and food distribution.

Natali Fuentes is a proud Mexican-American college student. She is currently a third-year student majoring in Public Health and minoring in Business Management at the University of California, Merced. Natali was born and raised in sunny Southern California. After she finishes her undergraduate studies, she hopes to continue her education and pursue a master’s degree in Public Health. Natali has a passion and drive to help rural communities that do not have access to or the knowledge of healthcare.

Aida Hassani is a Muslim Moroccan-American from the Bay Area. She is a third year undergraduate student at UC Merced majoring in Psychology and is interested in human behavior and decision making, while also focusing on mental health disorders. Currently she is working with Epperson Lab as a research assistant on a College Health study that is looking into academic anxiety in relation to different demographics. With NCPC she will assist a Public Health Center in the San Joaquin Valley and contribute to public health research as a Tobacco Endgame Intern. Her goal is to continue behavioral psychology research into graduate school, as well as work towards a career in psychology-focused documentary filmmaking.

Evan Martin is a fourth-year student at UC Merced, double-majoring in Health Psychology and Human Biology, originally from Escondido, California. He is a pre-medical student with strong interests in health equity and community service. Evan is engaged in research on maternal and infant health, serves in student government, and works in the emergency department as a medical scribe. He hopes to combine his academic, research, and clinical experiences to build a career dedicated to improving patient care and access in underserved communities.

Camila Sainez a first-generation Mexican American. She is currently a third-year majoring in Biological Sciences with a human emphasis and minoring in Public Health. Camila plans to graduate in Spring of 2027 and peruse a masters in Biological Sciences strengthen my understanding of human development of human bodies before attending med-school. Camila is driven to work within the healthcare system because of her passion to give back to communities and making a meaningful difference in people’s lives as a provider both physically and mentally. Coming from an underprivileged background, her biggest goal is to make a difference within underprivileged communities and unite the gap in healthcare access and equity. Camila hopes to be seen as a trusted and compassionate presence for individuals within underserved communities and to increase their opportunities and resources available to those who have been overlooked historically.

Jacob is a fourth-year psychology student at the University of California, Merced, from San Francisco, California. His interest in public health issues started when he worked as a research assistant in Dr. Linda Cameron’s Health Communication and Intervention Lab. Here, he learned the effects that childhood adversity had on the health of an individual that could persist throughout their entire lives, with nicotine use being one of the major coping mechanisms. In the future, he aims to pursue a graduate degree in health psychology and gain experience working with individuals who struggle with addiction and research better methods of coping with hardship and stress.

Sonja is a third-year Critical Race and Ethnic Studies major currently on a premedical pathway at UC Merced. She is a first-generation college student enthusiastic about pursuing a career serving her community as an OBGYN. Through her position as a research assistant with the NCPC, she explores race-based health disparities across the Central Valley. She also serves as the Treasurer for the Black Student Coalition, contributing to student advocacy and community-building on campus.
In her free time, she enjoys working out, reading, and doing arts and crafts. Her overall goal is to provide equitable healthcare in her community, specifically focusing on improving Black maternal and infant health outcomes. A fun fact about her is that she goes on an annual camping trip with her family every Fourth of July.

Kaylie Burdine is from the Central Valley in Hanford, California and is currently a 4th-year student at UC Merced, double majoring in Psychology and Public Health. With a passion for helping people, Kaylie aims to make a significant impact and spread awareness on the mental and physical health of individuals. In the future, Kaylie plans to seek further education to pursue a master’s in psychology and become a Behavioral Health Psychologist, where she hopes to develop strategies to promote healthier lifestyles and improve mental health outcomes.

Brandon Castillo Flores is a fourth-year Psychology major with a minor in Public Health at the University of California, Merced, set to graduate in Spring 2025. Assisting Dr. Anna E. Epperson in her lab, Brandon's research focuses on Latinx health behaviors and perceptions of cannabis use. Through the UROC Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, he leads a project investigating the relationship between the generational status of Mexican-Americans and their health risk perceptions of cannabis use. Brandon also interns at the Nicotine and Cannabis Policy Center, connecting research with community needs and gaining public health experience.
Brandon is passionate about addressing public health challenges through research and community engagement. He aims to continue researching cannabis risk perceptions in graduate school, becoming more involved with local communities, and developing preventive measures. His future goals include pursuing a Ph.D. in Health Psychology, influencing public policy, and educating future generations to reduce the stigma surrounding substance and cannabis use. He believes that education and knowledge are the best preventatives.

Kaylee is a third-year public health student at the University of California, Merced. She grew up in northern Georgia, where she observed firsthand the health disparities that exist among rural populations. These experiences inspired her research interests in rural health, community health, and health education. After graduating, Kaylee’s goals are to pursue advanced degrees in public health and medicine. She hopes to serve rural communities like her own as a provider and public health professional, with the ultimate goal of increasing access to healthcare among rural populations.

Esai grew up locally in Los Banos, California. Ever since he was a young age and entered high school, he has been surrounded and influenced by individuals who have actively used nicotine & marijuana products such as e-cigarettes. His first exposure to seeing the use of marijuana was in eighth grade and by high school, marijuana & nicotine e-cigarettes had become very popular among the youth. An early exposure to seeing substance use at a young sparked his interest in understanding the overall effects and the importance of regulating such substances. By conducting thorough studies on the health effects of nicotine, tobacco, and other abused substances, considering both short-term and long-term impacts, he believes we can develop policies that promote overall public safety and health.

Katharine Rodriguez Puga is a proud first-generation Mexican-American student at UC Merced. She will be entering her 4th year majoring in Biology and Public Health. She was born and raised in the Central Valley of Kingsburg. Daughter to hard-working immigrants she plans on continuing her studies after graduating and heading to her goal of becoming a physician. During her time at UC Merced, she has been a part of the photography club, YLP, and College Corps. She is pursuing a career in the health field and plans to return home to improve her community health outcome.

Vanika Kang, is one of the NCPC research assistants, working across a number of projects including supporting Public Health Department helping talk about the dangers of smoking at local Central Valley schools. Vanika is Public Health major at UC Merced and aspires to continue her study of public health in graduate school, specifically focusing on epidemiology.

Ilse Flores is a first-generation Latinx college student. Currently majoring in Psychology and Public Health at UC Merced. During her first year in college, she became interested in pursuing a graduate degree on learning that her education could extend beyond a bachelor’s degree. Ilse first came to the United States at the age of 14 without knowing any English after her parents decided to bring her back to the United States in an effort to provide her with an American high school education, and the promise of better opportunities. During the summer of 2023, Ilse collaborated with Professor Elaine Denny to create a research poster through UROC, the poster addressing the impact of misinformation on social media users in their daily lives.
During her time at UC Merced Ilse was placed on the Dean’s Honors List with a GPA of 3.52. Ilse has also had the privilege of joining the PSI CHI International Psychology Honor Society, The NCPC Tobacco Endgame Internship allows Ilse to gain necessary research experience, meaningful connections with local public health departments, and allow her to help address and understand health risk behaviors within Merced county. By promoting evidence-based policy advocacy and conducting research on tobacco and nicotine, Ilse believes she can help address health inequalities within her community.
